Retail Sales Appear Stagnating, But A Closer Look Reveals Improvement And Growth

Economic reports continue to buffet the stock market. However, what passes for analysis is often shortsighted and superficial. “Shortsighted” because the latest month takes on an inordinate weight. “Superficial” because one number is used rather then analyzing the dynamics lying underneath.

Retail sales offer a good example of these issues and how the wrong message can be read from the data.
